Apollo’s Sister: Photography and Art by Hyla Fox
As soon as I saw this lovely model, an idea for a finished piece of art popped into my mind. Handing her a sheer bit of white fabric, I asked the young lady to dance, to move her body slowly, especially from the waist up, while pretending, at the same time, to float on a fluffy cloud.
We played for almost an hour. Click, click. Twirl, twirl. But then, just as we were about to call it quits, one snap, one instant in time and I knew we got it! A fast glance at the LCD screen confirmed that the image was the exact one that lived, ever so briefly, in my head.
All the other raw files were deleted. This was the keeper. No point in spending time on anything else. What is the next step I asked myself? Use some Photoshop magic and put her on a cotton candy cloud or some sort of textured background? Both I finally decided.
First, she went onto a wonderful, rich background with bits and pieces of music. Ah, I thought. She will be Apollo’s Sister, the music muse. Next, I gently put her onto some clouds, floating in a summer blue sky and turned her into Apollo’s half sister…. the Goddess of the moon, the hills, the forests.
Loved them both. Which should I submit to the Creative Photography Competition? One day it was the music muse that was winning, the next it was the environmental goddess. Ultimately, I made a choice and yes, came home with a top award.
O.K. Now you decide. Which one did I submit? Which was the winner? You get a chance to be a judge. I’ll post the answer in a few days. Please take a second to let me know what you think. Feedback is always appreciated.
